Catalog description
In this course, students will get a hands-on introduction to creating art and design through code. Students will learn the basic fundamental building blocks of JavaScript to code original, screen-based creative designs that move, interact, and change over time. By learning to give the computer instructions for shapes, motion, and interaction, students will turn code into a flexible tool for artistic design and visual expression. The courses emphasizes play and experimentation as essential ways to solve creative puzzles and develop unique design projects. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Apply the fundamental principles of object-oriented programming using JavaScript and the p 5.js creative coding framework. 2. Develop self-expressive works of creative coding that demonstrate technical proficiency and critical and conceptual thinking skills. 3. Create original works of creative coding that communicate about and respond to contemporary political, social, and/or environmental issues. 4. Evaluate works of creative coding, especially as they relate to critically engaging with contemporary social, environmental, and/or political issues. 5. Have collaborative, constructive, respectful, and critical conversations about how creatives in the field of communication, design, and emerging media and technology can and do respond to contemporary social, environmental, and/or political issues. 6. Evaluate coding projects by meaningfully contributing to a positive and constructive critique culture. 7. Contextualize your own creative coding works through written statements, oral presentations, and online documentation. View Class Schedule
