Through readings, lectures, and discussion on the ownership structures and professional practices of media and the functions and uses of mediated global culture affecting public issues, this course examines media functions, production, and programming norms across diverse regional and international socio-cultural trends identified in terms of possibilities for advocacy and democratic change. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Identify leading media, their ownership structures, production practices, and their social relations with the public, advertising, and government. 2. Explain the political economy functions of media content production and programming related to socio-cultural trends and dominant ideologies. 3. Analyze the possible effects of media political economy using contemporary examples of public behavior, public policy, and advocacy campaigns. View Class Schedule
