Structural Calculations
Purdue University Northwest · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Practice in the calculation of loads, reactions, shear, and moment for determinate structures. Analysis and design of steel structural members subjected to tension, compression, bending and combined stresses. Typically offered Spring. Prerequisite(s): CMET 26001 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR CEMT 26001 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR CET 26000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR MET 21100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the understanding and gain proficiency in the principles of structural analysis and calculation and describe its function in the fields of construction engineering technologies. 2. Display ability to solve problems related to structural calculation in an accurate, organized and neat manner. 3. Apply principles obtained from technical computations and any other previous course related to problem solving and technical computations. 4. Apply principles obtained from Statics and Strength of Materials for the determination of internal stresses in determinate structures. 5. Show proficiency in manipulations of standards, specifications, codes and recommendations involving steel properties and behavior as a construction material. 6. Strengthen student’s proficiency of development of complex shear, moment, rotation and deflection equations as well as drawing appropriate corresponding diagrams. 7. Demonstrate understanding of analysis and design of members subjected to tensile stresses. 8. Exhibit understanding of analysis and design of members under compression including columns and trusses members, as well as analysis and design of base plates. 9. Display proficiency in the analysis and design of structural beams, columns, beam columns and bearing plates as members of a whole structure. 10. Demonstrate proficiency in the analysis of beams, unbraced beam, shear, and deflections. View Class Schedule
