Catalog description

Advanced treatment of geotechnical topics including shear strength of soils, theory of consolidation. Problems of rate- independent and rate-dependent settlement with elasticity theory; brief introduction to critical state soil mechanics; lateral earth pressure. Slope stability and design problem; bearing capacity of shallow foundations. Deformation of foundations. Subsoil exploration and site reconnaissance. Prerequisite(s): CE 32300 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C Course Learning Outcomes 1. Identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, engineering geology science and mathematics. 2. Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. 3. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences in geotechnical reports. 4. Develop and conduct appropriate soil and rock mechanics experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions. 5.
