A study of evolution as a basic concept of the biological sciences; an examination of current methods of experimentation within the area, as well as evidences for the possible mechanisms of evolutionary change. Typically offered Spring. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Explain what evolution is and provide an overview of the history of evolutionary thought. 2. Discuss the mechanisms contributing to evolutionary change in populations including individual variation, selection, mutation, migration, drift, mating, gene linkage, and quantitative genetics. 3. Discuss adaptations in detail as they relate to form and function, sexual selection, social behavior, life history traits, and adaptations of the genome itself. 4. Outline the history of life on earth, including the mechanism of speciation, the origin of life, the fossil record, and the relationship between the development and evolutionary history of organisms.
