Catalog description

Host-parasite relationships. Immunology. Bacteria and viruses associated with infectious diseases. Leveraging the primary research literature, this course examines the history and pathology of infectious diseases, including bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases. Further, this class may discuss the development of antibiotics and vaccines, the rise of antibiotic resistance, and the emergence and reemergence of diseases. In addition to gaining insights into the underlying causes and treatment of infectious disease, students will hone their ability to identify important biological questions, develop testable hypotheses, design experiments, evaluate results, and communicate the results effectively to both the research community and the general public. Prerequisite(s): (BIOL 22100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR BIOL 31600 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C-) Course Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the molecular basis of infectious diseases and evaluate approaches for their treatment and prevention. 2. Analyze the historical context of significant infectious diseases to evaluate how past discoveries, epidemics, and public health responses have shaped current understanding and practices. 3. Analyze primary scientific literature critically by identifying and summarizing key points, assessing experimental design, results, and conclusions, interpreting data from diverse experimental systems, and designing rigorous follow-up experiments. 4.
