This lecture-based course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the methods and underlying science behind forensic DNA investigations. The course provides students with a historical overview of the molecular and biochemistry-based methods which led to the modern era of forensic genetics. Classroom discussion will cover a variety of topics and techniques in molecular biology including the basics of population genetics, DNA extraction, DNA quantitation, marker selection and labeling, PCR amplification techniques for human identification (e.g., autosomal STRs, Y-STR, mtDNA, and SNPs), fragment analysis/separation by capillary electrophoresis, and an overview in population statistics for a variety of DNA testing applications. Students will gain firsthand knowledge of theory behind DNA testing, reporting, and quality assurance criteria typically encountered by casework forensic laboratories. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 10100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- AND BIOL 10200 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- AND BIOL 24400 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the history and evolution forensic genetics over the past 20-30 years. 2. Understand, recognize, and interpret results associated with advances in body fluid identification and DNA-based testing, including historical serological tests to modern-day STR and SNP DNA analysis. 3. Recognize common sources of biological material encountered in forensic serology/DNA investigations, their limitations, and how to develop a strategy for solving cases with varying levels of complexity. 4. Recognize, learn, apply the underlying concepts in molecular biology and biochemistry-based tests in forensic biology, including the interpretation of results from a broad range of tests. 5. Learn to understand and apply general concepts in population genetics, statistics, and its utility in forensic genetics. 6. Learn how to read, dissect, and discuss peer-reviewed literature with colleagues – and the student will be able to understand the critical role that peer review literature plays in forensic science and the admissibility of evidence in the courts. 7. Learn to successfully work as part of a team, which includes project planning/management, assessing scope, experimental design, troubleshooting, delegation and volunteerism, and teamwork. 8. Confidently present the results of their research through oral presentation, including learning new skills in how to critically design a PowerPoint presentation, practice the skill of public speaking, and answering questions before an audience.
