Invasive Species Ecology

Catalog description

This course is designed to provide students with an up-to-date perspective on invasive species. Part one will cover characteristics of invasive species and the ecological and evolutionary processes that occur when non-native species are introduced into new habitats. There will also be a review of past and present pathways that have led to the introduction and spread of invasives. Part two will cover invasive species control and management. Course literature will be a mix of recent peer-reviewed articles, reports and landmark papers. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 10100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- AND BIOL 10200 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- AND BIOL 33300 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Have a thorough understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of species invasions, and the factors influencing their establishment. 2. Understand the complex challenges associated with trying to minimize the impact and spread of invasive species. 3. Be familiar with many of the Great Lakes invasive species and their impacts. 4. Be able to critically examine and discuss the scientific literature. 5. Be able to present cogent and well-supported scientific arguments in both oral and written formats. View Class Schedule
