Medical Coding I

Catalog description
This course surveys the basics of medical coding for inpatient and outpatient health care settings. Various coding systems are introduced, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level I/II, and CPT coding. Specific focus throughout the course is given to diagnostic coding with an in-depth review of the format, conventions, and general guidelines for the ICD-10-CM code set is examined. You learn to apply appropriate diagnosis codes upon reviewing key health record information. Additionally, the course provides an introduction to clinical documentation improvement (CDI), compliance audits, and health information systems (i.e., CAC, encoders).
