Purdue University Fort Wayne · 3 credits · UGRD

We often take for granted the audible elements of film, but along with the image track, the soundtrack tells us a film’s story. This course introduces students to music and sound in film through three approaches: analysis, interpretation, and hands-on projects. The class traces the history of narrative Hollywood film—while also introducing other traditions—and focuses on uses of music and sound from the silent era to the present. No prior musical experience is required beyond enthusiasm and willingness to listen and watch critically.
