Catalog description

This course explores how the structural features of English—ranging from phonetics and phonology to morphology, syntax, and discourse—are employed to achieve communicative goals across diverse social contexts including the classroom. Emphasis is placed on the practical use of Englishes in real-world settings, highlighting variation and adaptability in language use whether spoken, written, or digitally mediated. We will also examine various approaches to grammar, including descriptive, prescriptive, and pedagogical grammars, and consider their roles in K-12 classrooms, language teaching, learning, and analysis. This course is suitable for ELL/MLL teachers, general education teachers, and those who are interested in the study of the English language.
