This course describes the fundamentals of environmental health risk assessment, with emphasis on the estimation of health risks from environmental chemical substances. It covers the four essential steps of risk assessment (hazard identification, exposure assessment, toxicity assessment, and risk characterization) and discusses the uncertainties inherent in each step. It presents an overview of risk communication principles and its role in the risk management decision-making process. Through interactive lectures, group discussions, and case studies, the course provides students the opportunity to become acquainted with the risk estimation process for different environmental health hazards . Students will synthesize the acquired knowledge and skills by assessing the health risks of an assigned case study and delineating options to address them. The goal is to provide an understanding of how to use the risk assessment methodology in the regulatory decision-making process.
