Assessment and Intervention of Individuals with Hearing Loss

Pre-requisites: AUDI 7118. The course deals with the effects of hearing loss on perceptual, cognitive, communicative, educational, occupational, social and emotional aspects of life across the life span. The student will learn about the common pathologies which cause hearing loss across the different stages of life. They will analyze How hearing impairment impacts speech understanding and communication. The course addresses the historical development of oral and manual philosophies, principles of amplifications systems and assistive technology. Different assessment and intervention approaches used to habilitate and rehabilitate hearing impaired individuals through the lifespan are discussed. Students will gain an understanding of the psychosocial aspects of hearing loss and counseling strategies for the patient, family and significant others. Different instructional strategies are used, lectures, group discussions, interactive modules, videoconferencing, and synchronous sessions. This is a hybrid course. This is a hybrid course.
