Nutrition in Public Health

This course provides a broad view of public health nutrition using a population and community -based approach for the assessment and intervention of nutrition -related public health problems. It covers the importance of public health and nutrition science, e vidence, measures and standards in the assessment of public health nutrition problems and the programs and policy designed to address them. Through lectures and field visits, students will become familiar with research, programs, and policies focused sole ly on nutrition as well as those in which nutrition is one of several components, with special emphasis on policies and programs in the US and Puerto Rico. The course covers the main nutrition problems of vulnerable groups and the relationship between nutrition and social and environmental factors. Students will have a toolbox of skills to utilize and apply in a wide range of practice settings in the assessment and intervention of population- based nutrition issues.
