Social Aspects of Aging

Catalog description
This online course introduces students to social gerontology from a public health perspective. Social factors impact on the aging process are analyzed, with emphasis on their relationship with older adult health and wellbeing. Similarities and differences in aging experiences from different local and international social and political contexts will be compared and analyzed. Through interactive lectures, discussion board, collaborative learning experiences and oral presentations students discuss main sociological theories as they apply to aging, social transitions in the aging process, the economics of aging, and the main problems facing older adults and aging societies. At the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate aging issues and the social dimensions that are affecting the aging population.
