Epidemiologic Surveillance

Pre-Requisite: EPID 6523. The course is oriented towards the study of the behavior of transmissible diseases but emphasizing their prevalence in Puerto Rico and in other countries. This course provides concepts and application of one of the basic tools of epidemiology: epidemiological surveillance. Students will study some communicable diseases, current concepts, methods, and procedures related to the organization and functioning of an epidemiological surveillance system to determine public health action needs and to evaluate the ef fectiveness of programs. Through interactive lectures and group discussions, students will learn how to create a surveillance system for each specific need, acquiring a useful tool that can be used in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of specifi c public health programs. The course will teach students how to make use of epidemiological surveillance systems, through specific training in the design and evaluation of existing systems.
