SEMINAR ON THE CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS OF HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

Catalog description

This course is offered to second year students in education and to regular and special education teachers. An introductory course which familiarizes students with the handicapped population, their rights and the services offered to them. During the course students will become acquainted with: 1. the classification and diagnostic systems used in special education, 2. the different special educ ation programs offered in Puerto Rico, 3. the organization and administration of special education programs in Puerto Rico, 4. resources (other than schools) that provide services to the handicapped children of Puerto Rico, 5. factors that influence the organization and provisions for special education services: Public Law 94-21, Law 2, and 6. the problems confronted by handicapped children in school and in the community. EDES 4015: MENTAL RETARDATION; three (3) credits, three (3) hours per week. Basic course on the psychology and principles of education of children with mental retardation.
