THE PROBLEM OF COLONIAL DEPENDENCE IN LATIN AMERICA

three (3) lecture hours per week. This course has three principal objectives: (1) all dependence theories will be analyzed and compared, studying, among other aspects dependence in contrast to classical colonialism and neo -colonialism, (2) the dimensions of this problems in Latin America. Economic, social and cultural aspects will be particularly examined, and (3) the student will be stimulated and guided to write a monograph in which all these aspects are researched in relation to the concrete experience of a particular Latin American society. CIPO 4585: SOCIAL CHANGE AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN LATIN AMERICA, three (3) cred its, three (3) lecture hours per week. Critical analysis of the theories of social change and political development. Emphasis will be given to those elements of social and political change which bear on the level of political participation. The applicability of these theories will then be studied and their usefulness as an analytical scheme to explain the peculiarities of the political evolution in different Latin American countries.
