MA115ASYNC is designed to introduce learners to theory-based information regarding the medical assistant’s role in effectively supporting the administrative and business operations of a medical practice. Learners will develop competencies in ethical and compliant appointment scheduling, insurance processing, medical coding, and financial procedures. Emphasis is placed on applying diagnostic and procedural coding systems (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS) to document medical necessity and ensure proper reimbursement. Students will explore health insurance processes, including verifying eligibility, documenting referrals, and utilizing billing systems to submit accurate claims and manage payments. Financial responsibilities such as processing claims, managing accounts receivable, bookkeeping, and cash flow will be reviewed. The course also offers a comparative overview of global and domestic healthcare systems and insurance models. Professionalism and career readiness are highlighted through training in telephone etiquette, appointment scheduling, and patient-centered communication. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to perform administrative duties in a medical office with accuracy, professionalism, and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
