Catalog description

MA110LAB is an entry-level medical assisting course in the clinical laboratory, vital signs, communications, and the function and use of computers in the medical environment. The course is designed to introduce learners to safety techniques regarding accidental exposure to blood and other body fluids and needle sticks. Learners are provided with hands-on guidance to demonstrate the following medical assistant skills: vital sign assessment (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure), Korotkoff phases, use of pulse oximetry, document height and weight (convert pounds to and from kilograms), communications, and the function and use of computers in the medical environment. Core MA skills that repeat in each course are administering intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SC), and intradermal (ID) injections, performing phlebotomy, conducting capillary punctures, and operating EKG procedures.
