Fundamentals of Caring Practical Nursing

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the foundational principles and practices of practical nursing. Students will explore contemporary trends in practical nursing, transcultural considerations, and the integration of spiritual and cultural sensitivity. Core concepts such as nursing theory, the nursing process, clinical judgment, dosage calculation, and evidence-informed practice are introduced to support sound caring, safe decision-making, and holistic care. Students will gain an understanding of the healthcare system, community health, and the roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse within various care settings. Practical skills in patient safety, ergonomics, hygiene, and health assessment of adults are addressed, along with effective communication, collaboration, and documentation across the healthcare team during patient admission, transfer, and discharge. The course also emphasizes health promotion, wellness, disease prevention, and human caring science as central to nursing practice. The concepts of Watson’s Caring Science, Human Caring Theory, and Quality and Safety in Education Nurses (QSEN) will be utilized throughout this course.
