Catalog description

This externship course provides students with the opportunity to continue learning through the demonstration and application of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the medical assistant program in both supervised clinical and online learning environments. Students are assigned to a clinical site by the College medical assistant externship coordinator and report directly to approved preceptors, working under their supervision with guidance from a medical assistant instructor. Through hands-on participation and clinical observation, students integrate administrative and clinical competencies while strengthening professionalism, critical thinking, teamwork, and workplace readiness. In addition to on-site clinical practice, the course includes structured online components designed to support professional growth and transition to employment. Students complete weekly reflective assignments, including Caritas-based reflections that emphasize compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care, as well as clinical observation documentation. College-to-Career assignments focus on professional communication, job readiness, and career planning. Successful completion of this externship course is required for graduation.
