MAT 1160
Elements of Prob. and Stat.
Prince George's Community College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Part of the three-course sequence for students preparing to teach at the elementary or middle school level. Topics include organizing, summarizing, presenting, and interpreting data, sampling, counting techniques, basic probalitilty concepts and distributions, simulation, expectations, and introduction to statistical inference. Concrete methods will be explored. Prerequisite: MAT 1050 Elements of Numbers and Operations with a grade of C or better. Note: MAT 1160 transfers to UMCP as MAT 214. It is designed to give prospective teachers a deep and comprehensive understanding of the mathematical content knowledge needed to teach successfully in the early grades. This is not a teaching methods course; nor is it a course that teaches elementary mathematics. Rather, it provides keys to how and why elementary mathematics works and a broad background in understanding statistics as used in the practice of teaching.
