Catalog description

Part of the three-course sequence for students preparing to teach at the elementary or middle school level. Topics include development of spatial reasoning and investigation of two-and three-dimensional shapes, their properties, measurements, constructions, and transformations. Visual and concrete representations will be explored. 3 class/2 lab hours. Prerequisite: MAT 1050 (Elements of Numbers and Operations) with a grade of C or better. Note: MAT 1060 transfers to UMCP as MATH 213. It is designed to give prospective teachers a deep and comprehensive understanding of the mathematical content knowledge needed to teach successfully in the early grades. This is not a teaching methods course; nor is it a course that teaches elementary mathematics. Rather, it provides keys to how and why elementary mathematics works.
