Catalog description

EAP-0100 is the first course in a three-course reading sequence of English for Academic Purposes. In this course, students develop basic skills for reading academic texts. Students use a variety of reading comprehension strategies such as finding the main idea and supporting points in simple academic passages. Students also use text markers and context to infer meaning. Additionally, students study words commonly used in academic texts through examining the number of syllables, primary word stress, word families, prefixes and suffixes, and definitions. Students use this target vocabulary in meaningful contexts, both through reading a variety of academic texts and through writing original sentences. Finally, students practice skimming and scanning text for information. This course is intended for students who are non-native speakers of American English and who did not complete all four years of high school in the United States. A grade of C or higher is required to successfully complete this course. Formerly ESL-0081. Students may not receive credit for both ESL-0081 and EAP-0100.
