Ceramics I

Catalog description

In this studio course, students are introduced to ceramics as a creative craft and art form. Students explore clay as a form of three-dimensional expression for both functional and non-functional works of art. Students actively learn the complex cycle of ceramic production; including but not limited to, types of clay, construction of forms, decorating, glazing, and firing. Students create forms in clay through pinch, coil, slab, and wheel-throwing techniques. Students also investigate documentation practices for three-dimensional works of art, history of ceramics, and how to maintain a safe working environment. Additionally, students articulate three-dimensional elements and principles of art and design through verbal and written critiques.
