Foundations I is an integrated, multidisciplinary course designed to provide first-year medical students with a comprehensive understanding of the molecular, cellular, and structural principles that underpin human health and disease. Using a clinically oriented approach, students will explore core concepts in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, histology, and human anatomy. The biochemistry component emphasizes the molecular mechanisms of cellular function, including protein targeting, nucleic acid structure and function, gene expression regulation, metabolic pathways, and signal transduction. Students will analyze the biochemical basis of genetic disorders and metabolic diseases and apply this knowledge to clinical case scenarios. The anatomy and histology component introduces students to the structural organization of the human body, from cellular architecture to organ systems. Emphasis is placed on regional anatomy, embryological and histological introduction, and radiologic imaging. Students will learn to identify anatomical structures, interpret diagnostic images, and correlate anatomical knowledge with clinical presentations and procedures. Throughout the course, students will engage in team-based learning, laboratory sessions, and professional collaboration exercises to foster clinical reasoning, communication skills, and ethical practice. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with foundational knowledge essential for understanding pathophysiology and advancing in clinical medicine.
