This foundational course for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) introduces key concepts in medical-surgical nursing, emphasizing holistic care for adult patients across a variety of clinical settings. Students will explore critical topics including nutrition, growth and development, pain management, comfort, rest, and sleep, and the principles of end-of-life care and palliative nursing. The course also covers essential areas such as bowel and digestive health, kidney function, fluid balance and elimination, and surgical client care, with an emphasis on postoperative nursing interventions. Students will learn to assess and address patient needs in these diverse areas, developing essential skills in patient care, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making. Through lectures, case studies, and practical applications, students will gain the knowledge needed to provide high-quality, compassionate care for patients experiencing a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The course also prepares students to work collaboratively with healthcare teams to promote optimal patient outcomes and improve overall patient comfort. Successful completion of all laboratory, theoretical, and clinical components are required to receive credit for this course.
