Vaccinology - The Science of Developing Vaccines to Prevent Infectious Diseases

This course provides a foundation in vaccinology, the science of developing vaccines. Specific focus areas include historical vaccine approaches and new strategies under development. During the course, students will learn about general aspects of vaccination including vaccine immunology, correlates of protection, vaccine adjuvants, vaccine formulations, and vaccine manufacturing. The course will review select licensed vaccines and then cover vaccines in development and new technologies being introduced to the vaccine landscape. The course will consist of an instructor led lecture component and weekly presentations by students on vaccine-related manuscripts. Once a basic understanding of vaccination has been developed, additional topics will include vaccination of special or target groups, vaccine safety, and public health and regulatory issues. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to read and evaluate vaccine literature. Students will also have an understanding of how vaccines are developed and the advantages and limitations of vaccines.
