A to Zoo: Introduction to Animal Wellness and Welfare

From house cats to hippos, this course takes students on a journey through the fascinating world of animal wellness and welfare. Designed for non-science majors, A to Zoo explores how animals stay healthy, how humans help them when they don't, and why welfare matters in both wild and domestic settings. Students will learn about basic anatomy, common diseases, animal behavior, nutrition, and preventative care across a variety of species. We'll also tackle ethical questions, explore careers in animal care, and bust common myths about animal health. Whether you love animals or are simply curious about how the animal world works, this course invites you to think critically - and compassionately - about creatures great and small. Topics include animal anatomy & physiology (in everyday terms!), common health issues in pets, farm, and wild animals along with nutrition, behavior, and enrichment. You will learn about animal diseases that affect human health. In addition, lessons on the ethics of animal care and welfare for pets, agricultural animals, and biomedical research will be addressed. A to Zoo will also explore the human-animal bond and cultural perspectives, explain vet visits, and engage students with field trips and guest speakers.
