Many Mexicos

Catalog description

This course will enable students to develop a multifaceted understanding of the history, society, and political contexts in which the people of Mexico have experienced life from pre-Columbian times until today, both in Mexico and in the territory that now comprises the United States. It will also address multiple ways in which Mexicans have been characterized throughout history in both aforementioned countries, with an emphasis on who is doing the interpretation of the Mexican character. Scholarly articles, book chapters, narrative fiction, poetry, and film, among other materials, will be used to acquire a broad, panoramic perspective on this topic. Concepts such as discourse, identity, and representation will be addressed via class discussion, written response papers, and original research projects.
