This introductory course explores the Korean language as a reflection of Korea's culture and society. Through an analysis of linguistic features, regional variations, and media representations, students will gain a deeper understanding of how language both reflects and shapes Korea's history, identity, and cultural practices. Major themes include Hangul, dialects, communication styles, and linguistic differences between North and South Korea. The course also integrates Korean media, such as K-dramas, K-pop lyrics, and cultural phenomena, to illustrate sociolinguistic concepts and trends. By examining language through historical, sociolinguistic, and practical perspectives, this course aims to deepen students' appreciation and understanding of Korean society and culture. This course will be taught in English and no prior knowledge of Korean is required.
