JAPNS 11 : Step-by-Step Japanese 1 is the first in a series of four two-credit Japanese language courses ( JAPNS 11 , JAPNS 12 , JAPNS 21 , and JAPNS 22 ), designed for students who prefer a slower pace or have demanding schedules. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required. This course covers the first half of the material in JAPNS 1 : Level One Japanese A (4 credits) and introduces fundamental grammatical structures through aural-oral practice. Students develop reading and writing skills in both the hiragana and katakana syllabaries and begin their study of kanji characters. The course also introduces aspects of Japanese culture and customs, knowledge of which is essential for behaving in a socio-culturally appropriate manner.
