Federal Health Policy Making

Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the health policy-making stages at the federal level of government. Students will have an opportunity to explore how policy agendas are created by policy stakeholders (e.g., advocates, interest groups, etc.) in defining social problems and identifying possible solutions. Students will next examine the steps for the development of legislation (e.g., bill introduction, committee referral, hearings, floor action, etc.). Students will also learn about the implementation of policy at the federal level after the formal enactment of legislation (e.g., programmatic guidance and final rules, etc.). Students will also learn about the Congressional budget process and judicial branch reviews and their impact on federal health policy formulation, implementation, and modification.
