Catalog description

This course is a survey of the development of gender roles from the pre-modern to modern period. In this course, students will examine the gender roles, relations, and identities among several cultures and among groups within them. Students will look for and try to understand the significance of the intersections between gender, race, class, and sex and better comprehend the cultural conflicts that arose when these groups interacted. Generally speaking, students will see how gender drove history through the twentieth century, resulting in our modern ideas of gender.
