This course surveys the history, culture, religion, and society of the Amish and related Anabaptist sectarian groups in North America. The course focuses on basic human issues, such as family, community, and economy, and the values that inform the Amish approach to these issues. Students will gain an understanding of their beliefs and values, i.e., why they often travel by horse and buggy and generally do not have electricity in their homes. This course also cultivates students' knowledge about the social and religious identity of the Amish. This course is suitable for students interested in several diverse topics ranging from agriculture, anthropology, history, and religious studies.
