This course covers essential topics in power and energy systems. Students will delve into alternating circuit (AC) power calculations, including complex, real, and reactive power and power factor correction techniques, focusing on single-phase and three-phase systems. It then explores mutual inductance and transformers, emphasizing advanced concepts, design, and analysis. Energy conversion is discussed, focusing on mechanical-to-electrical and electrical-to-mechanical energy conversion processes and efficiency and loss calculation. The course also includes a detailed study of electric machines and their operational characteristics, such as direct-current (DC), induction, and synchronous machines. The course also comprehensively studies electric drives, covering fundamentals, types (DC and AC drives), control strategies, and applications. Students will study power electronics, including power semiconductor devices, converters (DC/DC, DC/AC, AC/DC, and DC/AC), and applications in renewable energy systems and electric drives. The course concludes with renewable energy systems, focusing on photovoltaic (PV) and wind power systems and their design, operation, and integration into the power grid. This course is designed for advanced students aiming to deepen their understanding of these critical areas of electrical engineering.
