Catalog description

This course explores the complex relationship between mental illness and criminal justice involvement. Students will examine the historical context of mental health treatment, the criminalization of mental disorders, and the overrepresentation of individuals with mental illnesses in the criminal justice system. The course will cover modern developments and reforms, including diversion programs and mental health courts, and emphasize the importance of cross-system collaboration between mental health services and criminal justice agencies.
