Catalog description

Welcome to Generative Artificial Intelligence for All. This course introduces the world of generative AI and provides a basic theoretical lens of "co-intelligence" through which students can learn, work with, and critically assess this emerging technology. You'll learn what generative AI is, how it works, and its capabilities and limitations in creating novel content such as images, text, and music. Students will gain an understanding of the history and development of artificial intelligence, where generative AI fits within that landscape, how it came to be, and - at a high level - how it functions. The course also explores psychological and neurobiological theories that inform neural network design, including how large language models (LLMs) may be prompted (e.g., cognitive load theory). Students will examine the socio-political context in which generative AI has emerged and analyze this technological "revolution" in comparison to past shifts, such as the Industrial Revolution, and how these changes have shaped society and contemplate how this one may shape the future. In addition to developing hands-on skills, students will be introduced to how various industries - such as law, retail, advertising, healthcare, and journalism - are using generative AI in practice. Finally, students will explore the emerging opportunities, risks, and ethical implications of this technology for individuals and society. Join us to gain practical generative AI skills while critically examining its impact through an accessible, beginner-friendly introduction.
