HUMAN NEUROANATOMY

Catalog description

This course provides instruction on the functional and structural organization of the human nervous system. In addition to class sessions, students attend laboratory sessions devoted to human brain dissections, histologic sections of brains, neuroanatomical methods for analyzing brain and spinal cord organization, and neuroimaging. The structural organization of the brain and spinal cord is described at both the gross and microscopic levels. A regional approach will be taken in describing structures of the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, and the vascular supply of the nervous system. We will then take a more systematic approach to study structural-functional relationships in the motor, general sensory, special sensory, and autonomic systems. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the functional impact of brain trauma and a variety of neurological diseases, and how structural lesions present as neurological symptoms. Students will also learn fundamentals of human brain development.
