A dynamic research experience course to accompany the biology course Molecules and Cells ( BIOL 234 ). This lab course (FRI: First-Year Research Initiative) provides the opportunity for students to engage in experimental science in the laboratory, learning techniques that are complementary to cell and molecular lecture topics. Through a series of structured lab exercises, students will explore fundamental biological concepts and develop research skills in scientific inquiry, data collection, and analysis. Students will receive mentorship from a faculty mentor and a team of peer/near-peer learners as they apply the cycle of the scientific method to design their own research question and investigative approach. The course emphasizes development of critical thinking, collaborative science, research skills and effective communication of scientific findings. Students who have passed BIOL 230W or BIOL 230M may not enroll in this course.
