Biology: Populations and Communities - FRI Lab

Catalog description

A dynamic research experience course to accompany the biology course: Biology: Populations and Communities ( BIOL 224 ). This lab course (BIOL226W FRI: First-Year Research Initiative) provides the opportunity for students to engage in experimental science in the laboratory, learning techniques that are complementary to ecology and evolution lecture topics. Through a series of structured lab exercises, students will explore fundamental biological concepts and develop research skills in scientific inquiry, data collection, analysis, and scientific writing (which requires revision). Recording research and dissemination of research findings through writing are essential skills gained in the course. Students will receive mentorship from a faculty mentor and a team of peer/near-peer learners as they apply the cycle of the scientific method to design their own research question and investigative approach. The course emphasizes development of critical thinking, collaborative science, research skills, and writing with revision for effective communication of scientific findings. Students who have passed BIOL 220W or BIOL 220M may not enroll in this course.
