Biology: Basic Concepts and Biodiversity - FRI Lab

BIOL 116 (FRI Lab): A dynamic research experience course to accompany the proposed majors introductory lecture biology course ( BIOL 114 ). This course (FRI- Freshman Research Initiative) provides the opportunity for students to engage in experimental science in the laboratory, learning techniques that are complementary to topics covered in the lecture course. Through a series of structured lab exercises, students will explore fundamental biological concepts and develop research skills in scientific inquiry, data collection, and analysis. Students will receive mentorship from a faculty mentor and a team of student Learning and Teaching Assistants (LAs and TAs) who are FRI alumni, learning to apply the cycle of the scientific method to design their own research question and investigative approach. The course emphasizes development of critical thinking, collaborative science, research skills and effective communication of scientific findings. Students who have passed Biol 110 or Biol 110H may not enroll in this course.
