Environment and Society in South Asia

Catalog description

South Asia is widely recognized as a region disproportionately vulnerable to climate change. The region is also witnessing unprecedented development and growth that deepen environmental degradation, with already marginalized groups rendered disproportionately vulnerable. This course will examine social and environmental dynamics in South Asia, with attention to how gender, caste, and class shape experiences of changing climates. We will also look at grassroots and policy-level responses to these conditions, with the aim of forging more just environmental futures. We will look at case studies from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other geographic locations within South Asia to examine themes of environmental planning, intersectionality, environmental justice, borders, and social movements.
