Found and Fabricated: Found Objects in Sculpture introduces students to diverse sculptural techniques using found objects. Through hands-on projects, students will explore the creative potential of mixed media and found materials within a concept-driven studio practice. Assignments encourage experimentation and discovery, emphasizing the learning process. Students will learn cold joining techniques suitable for additive construction with found objects, such as: tape, knots, wire, rivets, hardware, fasteners, and simple stitching. The course content is delivered through readings, lectures, videos, and demonstrations. The course incorporates presentations on historical and contemporary practitioners who work with found objects. Projects will be assigned throughout the semester and group critiques will be scheduled at regular intervals to foster collaboration and feedback. This course is designed to focus and develop personal approaches to subject matter and to encourage a sustained interest in work. This labor-intensive studio experience builds cumulative skills through progressively challenging projects, with a focus on developing visually compelling concepts essential for successful artwork completion.
