Catalog description

In this course, students will develop a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary forces that have shaped language education program policies; evaluate how policies have influenced, and continue to influence, teacher education programs and educational and social outcomes of multilingual learners. Topics covered include research on the requisite knowledge educators must have to engage in practices that promote positive outcomes for multilingual learners; a historical overview of language policies and research foci; empirical evidence on the effectiveness of different language instruction education programs; contemporary issues of testing and validity, as well as reclassification and tracking; and contemporary debates (e.g., translanguaging and codeswitching; dual language for whom?).
