This interdisciplinary seminar explores American society and culture during the 18th century, providing graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the key literature and debates in the field. The course emphasizes intensive reading and critical engagement with historical and cultural studies. Topics include the experiences of European colonists in eastern North America, their interactions with Indigenous peoples, the development of economic systems, and major political events. Additionally, we will investigate the influence of religion, gender, and race on early American society and culture through focused readings and discussions. As the course progresses, students will identify overarching themes within the field of early American Studies and develop research questions that reflect their deepening understanding.
