AMST 800
Teaching American Studies
Pennsylvania State University-Hazleton Campus · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The goal of the course is to lay out a range of ideas, styles, and techniques that are used in college classrooms, and to encourage you to explore how these might fit into your own approach to teaching. Along the way, you will design and develop your own course, including a syllabus, in-class activities, written assignments, and a grading rubric. You will also teach a portion of a sample class to an audience in the American Studies program. In addition to the practical work you will produce, this course will also serve as a discussion space for us to think together about the importance of teaching humanities, what great teaching means, how to teach American Studies effectively, and how to deal with the everyday work of being an educator.
