Catalog description

This course will explore major themes of horror, terror, and fantasy in German literature and culture. What are the political and psychological meanings hidden in monster stories? What is the relationship between literary and historical accounts of horror? We will examine how fantastical, spectral, supernatural, monstrous, and demonic figures haunt visual representations, literary and cinematic narratives. Our discussions will focus on the impact of historical events, such as revolutions, epidemics, war, genocide, urban life, and modern anxieties, on art and media. This course is conducted primarily in German.
