This course is a seminar series focused on demographic processes, such as fertility, family transitions, migration, aging, and mortality. Formal demography considers the social, cultural, economic, health, geographic, and policy factors predicting these demographic processes, as well as the consequences of demographic processes for population size, composition, spatial distribution, and change. Students will learn the meaning, measurement, and appropriate analysis of these demographic processes, often with an emphasis on statistical and quantitative analyses. Specific dimensions of formal demography will vary across course offerings and students can repeat this course as topics change to meet Demography program requirements. Students are advised to reach out to the instructor to learn the specific course focus and to select courses in consultation with their adviser.
